Avram "Bene" Sklare
Being born and raised in Berkeley, CA Bene Sklare attended Berkeley High and went on to U.C. Santa Cruz where he discovered his love of horticulture which led to owning a landscape design company. This work sparked an interest in building that set him on a new path studying the art of Japanese woodworking with Oakland's resident master joiner, Jay Van Arsdale. He also apprenticed with Robert Darr, a master of traditional wooden boatbuilding at the Arques School in Sausalito. These two teachers brought forth in him a deep commitment to and love of craftsmanship.
Returning to school to train as a elementary school teacher Bene then worked for seven years as a middle school teacher.
Presently, Bene lives in West Berkeley with his wife and young son, in a home he built with his own hands.
Above all else, he loves spending long days in Tilden with his family.
Born in Berkeley and raised by his street artist parents, you could say Shizen was destined to work with his hands. In his early twenties he worked in the family business as a jeweler and sold his jewelry on telegraph avenue. Shizen always felt that jewelry fabrication was a gateway to carpentry, creating a strong structure that gets adorned and finished. So at around 30 years of age he started in the trades and has been proudly working on residential beauties in the east bay for the past 15 years.
Married in 2007 Shizen and his wife Bianca live in El Cerrito with their son Lawrence, daughter Lucia, dog Abby YoYo and their 9 chickens. In his spare time Shizen likes to travel with his family, watch sports, do a little gardening, and go fishing.
